Kawasaki vulcan 800 problems.

I've been having trouble getting the carburetor dialed in on my Vulcan 800. At this point, I'm not sure if my thoughts were correct, or if something else is causing the problem. It's a '99 VN800A with Cobra exhaust. I did the Russian Wolf EPA mod, and also drilled out the plug covering the air idle mixture screw.Voted most helpful review. Chris. Actually, the only REAL issue with the 04 model, is Kawasaki "tweaked" a few things starting with the 05 model. Nothing major... Idles ok, backfires through the carb with light throttle.I would think it's a lean condition, but it dies on the choke. Pulls pretty good at wot. Any ideas. Update, I turned the idle screw in to 1 1/2 out, was alittle better. Backfiring went down a little. So then I turned it to 1 1/4 out backfiring was a little worse.
